How to Prevent Hair Loss After Pregnancy...

Before Asher came along I had some pretty good hairs. While I was pregnant my locks were even better! My curls were very bouncy and my hair had tons of body. After I had Asher, around the time he was 3 months old, I noticed my hair starting to fall out.... and I mean seriously fall out... like clumps of it in the shower that nearly had me in tears! And it was everywhere... I was convienced that something was seriously wrong with me until I talked to my OB. She assured me that hair loss after pregnancy is VERY common and a good majority of women will experience it.... So my next question was how do I stop it? She told me there wasn't much I could do to stop it other than to keep taking my prenatal vitamins.
I had been taking my prenatal vitamins almost a year and continued, since I was still breastfeeding, so I wasn't sure how much they were helping with the hair loss. After doing a ton of research I found a great solution to help my poor hair. All of these products (pictured) are a part of my everyday hair routine. Once I started using them I noticed a HUGE difference in the amount of hair I was losing.
  1. Nioxin Shampoo- (you can buy the shampoo, conditioner, and scalp treatment as a set on amazon, be sure to read carefully so you buy the appropriate one for your hair) I use the #1 and am very happy with it. The shampoo is very minty and isn't heavy on my curls. I find that a lot of shampoos make my curls heavy... this one does not!
  2. Nioxin Conditioner- Not your average conditioner. You apply it from scalp to ends, (not just your ends like most conditioners) leave it on for a few minutes, and wash. After I wash this out of my hair my scalp feels amazing. Very tingly and clean!
  3. Nioxin Scalp Treatment- After getting out of the shower I spray this directly on my scalp and let my hair air dry. It also makes my scalp feel wonderful!
  4. Prenatal Vitamins- I take these daily because Im still breastfeeding, but will continue once I am done. Prenatal vitamins are full of Biotin and other great hair helpers.
  5. Phyto Anti Hair Loss Dietary Supplement- These little pills do wonders for my hair, are easy to swallow, and don't leave a nasty aftertaste in your mouth like some dietary supplements do. The one thing I have noticed with these are that they do make my skin a little oily, so instead of taking two tablets a day, I just take one. You can purchase these from Sephora if you have one close by or order them off eBay, like I did.
A few other things that has seemed to help with post prego hair loss has been drinking plenty of water, not brushing my hair as frequently, and avoiding blowdryers which can be hard to do on days that I am running late. I also throw in some extensions every now a then to give my hair a little extra volume help.

What are some things you do? I hope you all enjoyed this post!
Happy Friday!

  2. Hi Emily! Stopping by from P&P's blog hop. I can TOTALLY relate to the hairloss- my little boy is just now 6 months old, so it hits pretty close to home. In fact, THIS morning, I was noticing that I didn't have to empty my hairbrush every time I ran it through my hair and hoping that the loss was coming to an end. :)
